Team Maritime Singapore Creates Waves at Aviva Ironman Race 2008
The idea of gathering maritime professionals to take part in the Aviva Ironman Race came from Captain Frederick Francis, SMA during a casual conversation with Mr David Chin, Executive Director late last year.
With the help of Captain Frederick Francis from the Singapore Maritime Academy, the Singapore Maritime Foundation rallied the interest of the maritime professionals from different maritime industry and formed four teams, Team Altair, Team Bellatrix, Canopus and Deneb.
Dubbed Team Maritime Singapore, four teams from the maritime industry participated in Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore Triathlon on Sunday, 7 September 2008. The teams comprised senior executives from diverse maritime companies such as “K” Line, Lloyd’s Register Asia, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), PIL Pte Ltd, Swire and Torm Singapore Pte Ltd.
Members of the Team Maritime may come from diverse backgrounds, different nationalities and work in different fields of specialisations within the maritime industry but they have gathered together for a common goal – To be part of Team Maritime Singapore, to represent the maritime industry.
Grouped into teams of three, each participant completed their respective legs for the triathlon in the gruelling disciplines of Swimming (1.9 km), Cycling (90.1 km) and Running (21.1 km). After months of training, Team Maritime sportsmen have fostered close friendships beyond their working relationships.
With the wave start for the teams at 7.40am starting with the swimming and the completion of all the maritime teams by 2.15pm ending with the run, the teams have done the Singapore maritime industry proud by completing in creditable times amidst difficult and hot conditions. Our Team Maritime successfully completing the race in the 28th , 32nd , 47th and 49th position out of 75 teams in the competition.
As described aptly by BG (NS) Tay Lim Heng, Chief Executive for MPA and member of Team Altair,”I believe the event lived up to its Ironman billing - the conditions were indeed difficult, although it was nothing that tough maritime types cannot surmount!”
