The inaugural MaritimeONE Human Resource Seminar & Forum was held at the Marina Mandarin Hotel on 25 November 2009. Over 80 professionals and HR practitioners from the maritime community were present.
Mr Roland Teo, Deputy Director, Capacity Building Division, Singapore Business Federation shared the National Business Continuity Management (BCM) Programme and urged participants to be part of this programme. Mr Shahrin Osman, Senior Consultant and Deputy Head of DNV Maritime Advisory Services, Singapore and Ms Shinta Rotty, Consultant and Project Manager shared the findings of the recent environment working surgery of young maritime professionals and the motivational factors to retain them in their organisations.
The second half, an open dialogue session, “Why is the grass always greener on the other side? Insights and Review of hot to attract, develop and retain talents in the maritime industry” featured a panel of distinguished speakers. They include Mr Daniel Tan, Executive Director of SSA, Mr Tay Yeow Min, Asst Director of the IMC Capability Development of MPA and Mr Goh Teik Poh, President, South Asia, Neptune Orient Lines Ltd.
Chairperson, Mr David Chin, Executive Director of SMF highlighted seven points for discussion: Is MaritimeONE meeting needs of maritime companies, are existing training programmes meeting needs of maritime personnel, avoiding staff retrenching, problems recruiting personnel, retaining staff during an upturn, possibility of communication channel to share maritime industry practices, topics and events for next year.
The session was an enriching one and saw many participants sharing their challenges in recruiting and retaining young staff and talents in their organisation. They also gave constructive suggestions of courses and measures that can be adopted to attract, develop and retain talents in the long run.
