Maritime Knowledge Shipping Session 10 (Understanding Piracy)
 

Jointly organised by Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) and General Insurance Association (GIA), as part of the Maritime Knowledge Shipping Sessions, the Understanding Piracy seminar was held on 16 July 2009. Maritime experts were invited to present insights about their specialisations to heighten the maritime knowledge to both marine insurance professionals and the maritime community.

The first speaker, Deputy Director of ReCAAP, LTC (RETD) Nicholas Teo gave participants an in-depth understanding of the macro-view of piracy and the latest policies to combat this issue. He also shared useful tips on best practices, trends and analyses on the types of vessels that are likely targets of the pirates.

Mr Adrian Sutcliffe, Senior Consultant and Risk Assessor of International Ship Classification (IS Class) ISC, was the second speaker of the seminar. He highlighted the issue of piracy in Somalia and also shared his wealth of expertise on how ships can best protect themselves against piracy.

Over 300 marine insurance practitioners and maritime professionals attended this educational seminar.
