MaritimeONE AWARDS 4 SCHOLARSHIPS
FOR NTU DEGREE OF BSc (MARITIME STUDIES)

Four Nanyang Technological University undergraduates pursuing a Degree of Bachelor of Science (Maritime Studies) have been awarded the first-ever scholarships given out under the MaritimeONE (Outreach NEtwork) initiative.

Miss Joanna Koh Siok Khim and Mr Pek Wee Kian, both first-year undergraduates, have each been awarded the “K” Line-MaritimeONE Scholarship worth $50,000 each. In addition, first-year undergraduate Mr Raymond Tan Kee Meng has been awarded the FSL Trust Management-MaritimeONE Scholarship worth $50,000 and third-year undergraduate Miss Cai Kewei has been awarded the TORM-MaritimeONE Scholarship worth $38,000.

Administered by the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), the scholarships are part of the MaritimeONE initiatives aimed at encouraging students to consider the maritime industry as a viable career option.

The scholarships are funded by:

- “K” Line Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based company engaged in ocean transportation.
- FSL Trust Management Pte. Ltd., the Trustee Manager of First Ship Lease Trust which is a provider of leasing services on a long term bareboat charter basis to the international shipping industry.
- TORM Singapore Pte. Ltd., the Asian Headquarters of the leading Danish product tanker owner/operator A/S D/S TORM.

“We are very pleased that our MaritimeONE initiatives are making progress. With plenty of career opportunities and choices in the thriving maritime industry, these scholarships are definitely an added value for students interested in a maritime career,” said Mr S.S. Teo, Chairman of SMF and Chairman of the MaritimeONE Steering Committee.

Says Associate Professor Teh Cee Ing, Acting Chair, CEE: “The award of these scholarships to our students is a clear recognition of the quality of our maritime studies students. These new scholarships also illustrate the role that NTU continues to play in the Singapore economy by developing the talent needed for industry. NTU’s commitment to rigorous education programmes in maritime studies and the strong links we enjoy with industry will provide our students with an education that meets real world needs.”

Led by Mr S.S. Teo, Chairman of SMF, together with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the Association of Singapore Marine Industries and the Singapore Shipping Association, MaritimeONE was launched in April this year to provide a key platform for all maritime stakeholders, to collectively raise awareness of the maritime industry and attract quality manpower to the industry.

In addition to the scholarships, the MaritimeONE initiatives also include student outreach activities, student internships at maritime companies and networking events between students and prospective maritime employers.
