Dinner To Mark Change In Leadership At Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore

The maritime community in Singapore last night held a special dinner to mark the change in leadership at the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). The event was hosted by the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) and attended by about 100 stalwarts and senior executives from Singapore's maritime industry.

RAdm (NS) Lui Tuck Yew, outgoing Chief Executive of MPA, was lauded for his contributions to the local maritime industry. Since July 1993, he has provided exemplary leadership to MPA and the maritime industry. During his tenure, the MPA was appointed the Champion Agency for the development of Singapore as an International Maritime Centre (IMC).

In his speech, Mr Teo Siong Seng, Chairman of SMF, lauded RAdm Lui's "sterling leadership" and pointed out that he was instrumental in spearheading MPA's role as both regulator and promoter of the maritime industry. "Besides strengthening Singapore's position as the busiest port and growing the Singapore fleet to one of the largest in the world, which are already considerable achievements, RAdm Lui has spearheaded various other initiatives which will put us in a strong position to compete as an IMC," said Mr Teo.

Another key initiative was the establishment of SMF as a private sector-led organisation working with maritime industry partners and government agencies. Mr Teo singled this out as a "most timely initiative" which has been pivotal in stepping up efforts to promote Singapore as an International Maritime Centre.

From I June 2005, RAdm Lui assumes his new post as Chief Executive Officer of the Housing and Development Board.

The new Chief Executive for MPA, BG Tay Lim Heng, took over the helm from 15 April 2005. BG Tay, formerly Director of Joint Intelligence Directorate, Ministry of Defence, has held several key appointments in the Singapore Armed Forces. "The SMF looks forward to working closely with BG Tay as the maritime industry in Singapore moves ahead to take on new challenges and to scale new frontiers, " said Mr Teo.

The Appreciation cum Welcome dinner last night was held at the China Club.
