Singapore Maritime Industry Enjoys Good Performance in 2006
The Singapore maritime industry celebrates another year of port and maritime achievements in 2006 in the areas of shipping tonnage of vessel arrivals, container and cargo throughput, bunker sales and ship registration. Growth figures for vessel arrivals and bunker sales surpassed 2005's full-year figures even before December 2006.
The port and maritime achievements were announced by the Minister for Transport, Mr Raymond Lim, at a maritime industry event this evening.
Shipping Tonnage of Vessel Arrivals
Singapore is set to retain its seat as the world’s busiest port, as vessels arrivals in terms of shipping tonnage reached an unprecedented 1.3 billion gross tons (GT) in 2006. This supersedes the 1.15 billion GT record set in 2005 by some 14.2 per cent. Container ships were the top contributors, accounting for 35 per cent of the total vessel arrival tonnage. Tankers came in a close second, contributing 31 per cent to the total figure.
Container and Cargo Throughput
Container traffic improved on last year's record to reach 24.8 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), a 6.9 per cent increase from the 23.2 million TEUs handled in 2005. The total cargo tonnage handled in 2006 registered positive growth as well, climbing 5.9 per cent to reach 448.2 million tonnes.
Bunker Sales
In 2006, the volume of bunkers sold in the Port of Singapore continued to rise, further consolidating Singapore's position as the world's top bunkering port. Total bunker sales for the year reached 28.4 million tonnes, pushing past 2005's figures by 11.4 per cent.
The Singapore Registry of Ships
The Singapore Registry of Ships also did well last year. The total tonnage of ships under our register grew by some 5.6 per cent to reach 34.8 million GT as of end December 2006.
