APPRECIATION DINNER FOR MR YEO CHEOW TONG
For Immediate Release

The maritime industry in Singapore is coming together to show its appreciation to Mr Yeo Cheow Tong, the former Minister of Transport. He has tirelessly served the nation for 21 years and has contributed significantly to the growth of the maritime industry since his appointment as the Minister for Communications (which included Sea Transport) in 1997. The name change to Ministry of Transport was in 2001.

During Mr Yeo's tenure as Minister of Communications and later Transport, Singapore's maritime trade has grown from strength to strength. His determination to develop Singapore's maritime industry has propelled her to the forefront of the global maritime community. Singapore continues to rank among one of the top maritime centres in the world, and the industry is forecast to grow between six to nine percent in the near future.

2005 was an especially good year for the maritime industry. With Mr Yeo at the helm, Singapore retained our position as the world's busiest port by vessel tonnage, with total tonnage rising 10% to 1.15 billion gross tonnes. As the world's top bunkering port, our bunker sales grew by 8% to reach 25.5 million tones. 2005 also saw Singapore surpassing Hong Kong in container volumes, regaining our status as the world's busiest container port for the first time in seven years.

Under Mr Yeo's exemplary leadership, he spearheaded the move to establish Singapore as an International Maritime Centre (IMC), a one-stop centre for integrated maritime operations and services. Several initiatives Mr Yeo started to drive Singapore's impressive growth as an IMC included the Maritime Cluster Fund, which promotes and strengthens the Maritime sector of Singapore with funds for manpower training and infrastructure development.

Another significant development to enhancing Singapore's IMC status was the set-up of the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF). SMF plays the important role of bridging the private and public sector and aims to build ties between the different sectors of Maritime, allowing strategic partnerships to be formed within the industry. Another key role SMF takes on is to promote the Maritime sector as a dynamic and meaningful career choice.

The Singapore Maritime Foundation will hold an Appreciation Dinner for Mr Yeo to thank him for his contributions to the Maritime sector. The details of the dinner are as follows :
