Singapore Maritime Foundation Appoints Key Members To Its Board And Advisory Panel
For Immediate Release

Singapore -- The Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) appoints five key members to its Board and Advisory Panel, enhancing its breadth of expertise.

SMF is a private sector body, which provides an avenue for the maritime industry to participate in the development and promotion of Singapore as an International Maritime Centre (IMC). Its five appointees, one to its Board and four to its Advisory Panel, will assist SMF in its objectives, which are:

- To provide a forum for the exchange, generation and development of ideas and proposals to realize the vision of Singapore as an IMC,
- To act as a catalyst, to encourage and stimulate the development and cooperation between and amongst the sectors of the maritime industry and
- To partner the government as the private sector representative in activities to promote Singapore as an IMC and in the development of a maritime work force to support the industry.

The SMF Board members provide strategic guidance to the Foundation. They represent leaders in their respective fields, and are ideal champions to drive key initiatives in their own sectors. Through their respective networks, the Board members encourage industry interaction and rally support for participation in SMF-initiated activities. One notable example of the Board's efforts in developing Singapore as an IMC through working with the private sector to develop specific sectors in the maritime industry is the creation of the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA) in November 2004. The set-up of SCMA was mooted by the SMF Working Group on Maritime Arbitration led by Board member, Dato' Jude Benny.

The varied background of the Board members reflects SMF's objective of bringing together the various segments of the maritime industry including Maritime law and arbitration, ship finance, ship owning, marine, and offshore. The appointment of Mr. Kuok Khoon Kuan, Managing Director, Pacific Carriers Ltd, to the Board enhances the Board's breadth of maritime expertise. A well-respected maritime veteran, Mr. Kuok will be a convincing champion of SMF's key initiatives and enhancing industry participation in SMF activities.

The present Board members are:

Mr S.S. Teo, Managing Director, Pacific International Lines, & Chairman, SMF Board
Mr Choo Chiau Beng, Chairman & CEO, Keppel Offshore and Marine Ltd,
Dato' Jude Benny, Partner, Joseph Tan Jude Benny,
BG Tay Lim Heng, Chief Executive, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, and
Mr Brent Nelson Smith, Managing Director and Head of Corporate & Investment Banking, Executive Committee Member, Wholesale Banking Group, DBS.

SMF also warmly welcomes four new personalities to its Advisory Panel, which comprises established industry practitioners. The Advisory Panel members share the same drive and enthusiasm to grow the maritime community and to generate a greater awareness of the maritime industry amongst the general public. They are also champions in encouraging industry participation in SMF initiatives.

The Appointees to the Advisory Panel are:

Ms Louisa Follis, Director, Consultancy & Research, Simpson, Spence and Young,
Mrs Gina Lee-Wan, Partner of Allen & Gledhill Advocates & Solicitors,
Mr Lim Tau Kok, Managing Director, Neptune Shipmanagement Services Pte Ltd, and
Mr Roland Tan, Director, Singapore Maritime Academy, Singapore Polytechnic.

Commenting on the appointments, Mr. S.S. Teo, Chairman, SMF said, "We are delighted to have Mr KK Kuok on our Board and four additional members on our Advisory Panel. The Appointees are indicative of SMF's focus on encouraging projects and initiatives to promote Maritime's ancillary services and to attract more youths to join the industry. This is the first time we have two female members, which is a reflection of the increasing number of women holding senior positions in an industry dominated by men."

Added Mr Teo, "Our new appointees' expertise range from legal to ship management, to research and academia and they will greatly enhance the scope of our present Advisory Panel. Their input will provide SMF with a broader perspective to the maritime industry, balancing the ancillary services and the better-known sectors, such as shipping, and rig and ship building and repair."

Enthusiastic about her new appointment, Mrs Lee-Wan said, "I am pleased to be able to assist in developing the maritime industry from a legal perspective. I have always been a keen proponent of industry development and raising public awareness of the maritime industry. This appointment is a great opportunity for me to do my part in encouraging interaction, both inter and intra industry."

Echoing Mrs Lee-Wan's sentiments, Mr Tan said, "There is a growing interest amongst the youths in the maritime industry as seen in the increasing enrolment of students in maritime studies. They are beginning to realise that there is more to the maritime industry than just ships and ports and I look forward to driving SMF's objective of attracting more youths to join the industry as well as getting more industry interaction and networking."

The present Advisory Panel includes:

Mr Patrick Phoon, Deputy Managing Director, Evergreen Shipping (S) Pte Ltd,
Capt. Ib Fruergaard, Shipping President, Titan Petrochemicals Group Ltd,
Capt. Takamaru Ishida, Chairman & CEO, NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd,
Mr Kenichi Kuroya, Chairman, 'K' Line Pte Ltd,
Mr Richard Loo, Managing Director, L.C.H. (S) Pte Ltd,
Mr Ji Hai Sheng, President, COSCO Corporation (S) Ltd, and
Mr George Joseph, Transportation Editor, The Business Times.

SMF would like to thank out-going Board member, Mr Teo Joo Kim, and Advisory Panel member, Mr Chan Tuck Hoi, for their invaluable service. It looks forward to the contributions of its new appointees in reaching out and getting more participation from the maritime industry both regionally and locally.

While the Board and Advisory Panel provide the core source of expertise, SMF consults with various maritime and related associations and groups to explore mutually beneficial projects. These include the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA), Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI) and Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers Singapore (SNAMES).
