SMF LAUNCHES ITS GREAT MARITIME ADVENTURE
Winners can take home a total of $25,000 cash and prizes
What has reality adventure got to do with the maritime industry? Plenty, if you ask the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), whose objectives include elevating the awareness of the maritime industry to people in Singapore. SMF launched today its Great Maritime Adventure (GMA) - a one-day, fun-filled adventure that will take participants through a myriad of maritime-based challenges.
The launch took place at Raffles Place and Shenton Way with 'sailors' distributing posters and registration forms to lunch time crowds. The GMA is the flagship event of SMF's Maritime Now! programme which aims to raise the profile of Singapore's maritime industry and attract school leavers and young adults to maritime careers.
The idea was to generate awareness on the wide variety of maritime professions and their excellent career prospects by organising a day-long race involving different stops all over the island.
SMF General Manager, Trudy Leung says: "We developed the GMA as it is a unique and fun way to engage the public and to bring about greater awareness of the maritime industry. Participants can expect a fun-filled adventure that is challenging with its share of exciting tests and rewards - not unlike the everyday lives of professionals in the maritime industry."
"We want to change people's perception from the idea that the industry only means ports and shipyards. There are many other ancillary services like maritime law, insurance,
banking, IT and logistics which working professionals and students can consider going into. This is an industry that has lots of potential and we want to bring it to the forefront of public awareness."
Participating teams, each consisting of three members, will pit against each other as they race to various locations around Singapore based on the given clues. At each location or pit-stop, the teams will be given a challenge which they will have to complete before moving on to the next stop.
The winning team can look forward to receiving $10,000 cash and Creative MuVo MP3 players while teams coming in second and third will receive $7,500 and $5,000 cash respectively, as well as Creative MP3 MuVo players.
Interested GMA participants can register their teams at www.sgmf.com.sg/gma. Closing date is 28 January 2005. Selected teams will have to pay a $30 registration fee which the SMF will match dollar-for-dollar and contribute to the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.
The SMF is a private sector-led organisation that seeks to work in partnership with different sectors of the maritime industry and relevant government agencies to develop and promote Singapore as an International Maritime Centre.
The organisation of events like the GMA to help promote the maritime industry is timely considering that the industry is booming - the maritime industry currently contributes 7% towards Singapore's Gross Domestic Product. Presently, the industry employs 120,000 people. However, this is projected to go up to 200,000 by 2018 signalling good employment potential in the future.
Ms. Leung says: "We encourage students, young adults, professionals and the young at heart to participate. Be part of the inaugural Great Maritime Adventure and experience the ways maritime touches our lives."
