The UGS Graduation Ceremony is a significant milestone as it marked the closure of the SMF-UGS collaboration of the Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering degree programme in Singapore. This course was first initiated in 2004 by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and administrated by SMF to cater to the increasing needs of graduate engineers in the fields of naval architecture and marine engineering.
The third and final batch of 21 graduating students for 2008 has done Singapore proud once again, with 4 graduates with First Class degree, 12 with Second Class Honours - Upper Division and 5 with Second Class Honours – Lower Division.
The ceremony was an intimate and dignified affair held in the Asian Civilisations Museum. The Guest-of-Honour Dato Jude Benny, Singapore Maritime Foundation Board Member graced the occasion and gave an insightful and inspiring address to the guests. He shared insights into the exciting Singapore maritime industry and assured the parents of the great career opportunities that lie ahead. Over 100 guests including the graduates’ proud parents, family members and representatives of maritime companies witnessed the graduation ceremony as the graduates went onstage to receive their scrolls.
Four outstanding students were awarded special awards, in recognition of their excellent academic performance and projects. They are:
• Mr ANG Choon Beng for ‘The Salilaksha Basu Memorial Prize for Best BEng Naval Architecture with Ocean Engineering Graduate’
• Mr YEAP Boon Hou for ‘The IMarEST Prize for Best BEng Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Graduate’
• Miss Zhang Yanting for ‘The SMF Award, Best Individual Project’
